Ange Tyler Calls for Safer Young Drivers in BBC Radio Interviews

In a week of powerful media appearances, ELY Memorial Fund founder Ange Tyler has spoken out on the devastating consequences of dangerous driving - and the urgent need for better education - during interviews with BBC Radio Hereford & Worcester and BBC Radio 5 Live.

On Monday 23 June, Ange was invited to speak to Tammy Gooding on BBC Radio Hereford & Worcester in the wake of yet another fatal crash involving a young driver. Drawing from her own experience of losing her daughter Emma Louise Young in 2010, Ange shared her heartfelt message to families and young people:

You’ve got the privilege to drive a car — treat it with respect. Look after yourself and your passengers. This is a life skill you need to respect and enjoy.

The interview also gave Ange the opportunity to promote the ELY Young Driver Experience, which returns on Monday 21-25 July 2025 at Herefordshire College. Aimed at young people aged 14–17, the YDE is a collaborative, educational event delivered with the support of local emergency services and driving instructors. It offers hands-on driving practice in a safe environment, alongside workshops covering first aid, road safety, the dangers of drink and drug driving and car maintenance.

On Tuesday 2 July, Ange also appeared on BBC Radio 5 Live with presenter Nick Campbell, contributing to a wider discussion on the dangers of tailgating. The conversation soon turned to the everyday risks on UK roads - and the disproportionate number of fatal crashes involving young male drivers.

Everyone has to have respect for our roads,” Ange urged. “Driving is a life skill - but it’s also a huge responsibility. If we don’t help young people drive more safely, we will keep losing lives needlessly.

Ange’s moving appearances come at a crucial time, as The ELY Memorial Fund continues to champion its mission to save young lives and support bereaved families in Herefordshire who have lost a loved one in a road traffic collision.
